As the weather warms up and the weekends become sunny, I start dreaming of…yard sales! I don’t know which is more exciting–the “thrill of the hunt” where you never know what treasures are to be found in someone else’s old discarded junk, or the prospect of finding something useful for next to nothing. Either way, when Saturday morning rolls around and nothing else is planned, I love to jump in the van and go look for yard sales.
Of course, I can’t sneak off without several kids wanting to come along. After all, they like a good bargain as well as I do and they always manage to find some trinket or other that they just can’t live without. This past Saturday I took the older 4 boys. I gave each one of them $2.50 to spend however they chose, and we were off.
My 2 best finds were at our local Humane Society’s yard sale. I found a bag full of Lego Duplo bricks and train track pieces. (We already have the Lego Duplo train.) When I took it to the lady in charge to ask how much it was, she looked in the bag, paused for a second, then said “Oh, you can just have this.” I was very excited. And so was Josiah when I brought it home and Joshua set it up for him!
My other fun find was a set of demitasse china cups and saucers. There are 6 little saucers and 11 cups. I figure when Joanna gets a little bit older she can have pretend tea parties with them. I’ll just put away the extra cups so she has 6 of each piece. In the meantime, I think I’ll display them on a shelf in her room–they are so sweet and dainty!
I paid $3 for the whole set. Aren’t they pretty? Here’s a close-up of one cup and saucer:
The boys found good deals on some unopened Hot Wheels cars, a board game, and a couple of little hand-held games. Everyone had fun! I can’t wait to see what we find the next time we go yard sale hunting!
So what are YOUR best yard sale finds? Have you found any treasures lately that you are excited about? Feel free to share in the comments…I’d love to hear from y’all!
