If you are a parent of boys, I’m sure you know just how quickly they can go through the knees of their jeans! With 6 boys (okay, so the littlest guy isn’t really destroying jeans yet!) in my household, I often end up with piles that look like this:
Other than the knees, the rest of each pair looks good. And I can’t bear to waste all these jeans, so yesterday I attempted to turn a few pairs into shorts. I laid a pair out on my cutting board, and tried to get them as straight and smooth as possible. Then I used my ruler and rotary cutter to lop off the bottoms, a little bit above the knees.
I usually do narrow hems by folding in the raw edge, then folding it over again. Since that results in 3 layers of fabric, and the denim in these jeans is really thick, I decided I’d just overlock the raw edge, then just fold it over once. This ended up being a good idea, since the side seams are already folded over a couple times…every time I crossed a side seam, I had to really slow down and baby my machine over all that thickness.
Here is the first pair done. They’re a little narrower in the leg than regular shorts, but they’ll work great for playing around the house and yard. And I’m thrilled to have repurposed something that I might otherwise just have to throw out, not to mention not having to go buy more shorts!
I made 2 pairs yesterday, which took me about half an hour. I’m going to make up some more for the other boys–they all have holey jeans! I’m saving the cut-off legs for another project. I’m thinking about making a denim picnic blanket. What other things can I do with cut-off jeans legs? Any ideas?
In other news, here are pictures of the 2 new critters the boys acquired over the week end. Kitties!
They are both girls, and their names are Tulip and Rosie. I think. The boys keep changing their names. One of them was Lily, at least for a few hours on Saturday. They seem to be sticking with a flower theme, though.
They’re in the mud room for these pictures, but they will be outside-only kitties because some of us have allergies! While they’re tiny they’re staying in the garage and only going outside when the boys are outside to make sure they’re okay. The boys have promised that they will do all of the necessary care for the kitties. We shall see…
They are awfully cute, though!
