One of our favorite things about living in New York (after living most of our lives in Texas) is having REAL winters! Our whole family loves the snow, and we’ve so enjoyed various winter activities and sports. On New Year’s Day we joined some friends and did some ice skating. The big boys skated, and we all took turns pushing the little ones around on metal chairs. Joanna actually did put on skates and attempt to get around on them, but that didn’t last long!
Here is Daddy pushing Josiah around on the ice:
And Joshua pushing Joanna:
A line of chairs…these chairs are great both for allowing preschoolers to ride AND for allowing new skaters to remain upright, all at the same time! LOL
Jordan, Jonathan, and Joey:
Even little Jeremiah got in on the action!
The other winter sport we’ve been enjoying as often as we can is snow skiing. We went a couple of days after Christmas and took my brother and sister-in-law along. Since we were expecting several inches of snow the night before, we parked our van at the end of our very long driveway so we wouldn’t get snowed in. That made for a very long hike VERY early in the morning, to get to the van:

And here’s Jordan waiting, with Daddy and Josh in the background:
On the lift!
My brother Chris and sister-in-law Steph…we sure had fun skiing with them!
Jonathan has switched from skiing to snowboarding this season…he’s our “cool kid,” and apparently snowboarding is more popular with the younger crowd.
Between clearance sales, Craigslist, and thrift stores, we’ve managed to buy good used (or deeply discounted new) equipment for everyone, so our plan is to go regularly…and count it as home school P.E. class! 😀 Here are Jon and Jordan on our second trip out:
Joshua and Joey having some pizza for lunch. Next on my agenda is to figure out a way to avoid having to buy food in the overpriced resort cafeteria, while not eating frozen sandwiches out of the van, either. Any ideas?
Here’s my skiing self-portrait, just to prove that I was there as well:
This was Joey’s first time skiing. He took a lesson in the morning, then skied easy trails with us in the afternoon. At one point Daddy and I took Jordan (who is currently the most advanced of all of them) on some harder trails, while Josh and Jon took Joey on the easier runs. When we caught back up with them, Joey was doing little jumps in the beginner area terrain park. He is fearless!

And finally, this past week the boys and I went to a smaller place much closer to home and did some night skiing. I didn’t get any photos except for one of Jordan on the lift:
The boys are enjoying skiing very much, and are visibly improving each time we go out. This is definitely something we will miss a lot if we ever get back to Texas!
