Don’t you just love it when 5 o’clock rolls around, your kids start complaining that they’re STARVING, and you have no idea what you’re going to make for dinner???
Yeah, neither do I!!!
I needed a way to post my meal plan and chore charts so my kids would have food to eat that didn’t come from a last-minute run to the pizza place down the street, and so they would know who had to clean up what afterwards. I happened to have this framed print that no longer matches any of my decor, so I decided to repurpose it.
I bought several 12″ x 12″ sheets of scrapbook colors at my local craft store, in colors that go better with the rest of my decor, and carefully cut and taped them together trying to match the pattern as closely as possible where the paper edges aligned.
I taped the now larger piece of paper to the back of the frame glass, lining it up at the top so that the tape wouldn’t show behind the frame. Then I painted the frame white, sanded it a bit in a few places to give it a more shabby chic look with some of the brown wood showing through.
…And then I slapped a couple Command Hooks on it to hold my printed and hole-punched calendar and chore chart.
I don’t even have a picture of it in that state. It was useful, but it wasn’t very pretty. Why, do you ask, did I not make it pretty?
I’ll tell you why. I had originally envisioned a calendar made from chalkboard vinyl. Back when I bought my Silhouette and all my vinyl, I did buy black chalkboard vinyl. In fact, I bought TWO rolls. But I never could make myself use it…because I CAN’T STAND chalk! I love the look of all the neat chalk board signs and decor that I see all over Pinterest, stores, and friends’ houses, but I cannot bear the feel and sound of writing with a stick of chalk. I shudder even just writing about it here, and there is no chalk in sight! My kids like to play with sidewalk chalk, and they HAVE TO be the ones to pick it up afterwards…I can’t touch the stuff.
But then a few weeks ago, I found THIS wonderful thing at Michael’s:
Now I’m sure this isn’t remotely new, and everyone out there already knows all about it. But it is completely new to ME, and now I can finally chalkboard-all-the-things to my heart’s content. So I pulled off the command hooks and paper charts, and made a nifty calendar out of chalkboard vinyl. I added the “menu” header and 2 boxes for chores and making note of what grocery items we’ve run out of, and marked it all up with my new handy-dandy wet-erase chalk marker. No skin-crawling necessary!
It hangs in the hallway between my kitchen and dining room, opposite my big pantry. And it makes me happy every time I walk by and look at it. SO much prettier than my earlier version!
It’s much easier for me to stick to a meal plan when I can see it easily. My goal is to completely cut out last-minute unplanned restaurant or take-out meals, since with our family size they totally kill our budget. Now that I have my menu planned and visible, my next hurdle is to make sure I check it the night before so I know what I need to defrost, etc. I can’t tell you how often I wait until 3pm to figure out that I need to thaw 3 lbs. of chicken for dinner. But I’m working on it. My budget and hungry children depend on it!
